Heads Up, Baby!
Many expectant parents dream of a natural, vaginal birth. However, this dream can be challenged if their baby is in a breech position, meaning their feet or buttocks are coming down first. While most babies eventually turn head-down on their own, some remain breech by delivery time, increasing the likelihood of a cesarean section.
This is where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) techniques like moxibustion and acupuncture come in. These practices have been used for centuries to address various health concerns, and they are also helpful in turning breech babies.
What are Moxibustion and Acupuncture?
- Moxibustion: A traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves burning a dried and prepared herb called mugwort or Ai Ye leaves near specific acupuncture points on the body. The heat stimulates these points, influences energy flow (qi) and draws the babies head down.
- Acupuncture: Hair-thin needles are inserted at specific points along meridians, which are channels believed to carry Qi (energy) throughout your body. By inserting needles into specific points, acupuncturists aim to restore balance in the body’s energy flow. This can help to improve symptoms and promote overall health.
How Do Moxa and Acupuncture Work for Breech Presentation?
The exact mechanism by which moxibustion and acupuncture influence fetal position is not fully understood. However, some theories suggest that used at the right points, they:
- Increase uterine activity: Stimulation of specific points can trigger gentle contractions, encouraging the baby to move into a more optimal position.
- Improve blood flow: Increased blood flow to the uterus can create a more comfortable environment for the baby, potentially prompting them to reposition.
- Relax the muscles: Acupuncture can help relax the body and tight muscles that may be restricting the baby’s movement.
What Does Research Say About Acupuncture and Moxibustion?
Studies on the effectiveness of moxibustion and acupuncture for breech presentation are positive. Research suggests:
- Moxibustion: When used specifically at the BL67 point on the little toe, moxibustion increases the chances of a cephalic (head-down) presentation by delivery. Studies show a success rate of around 30-50%.
- Acupuncture: While studies show promise, the scientific evidence for acupuncture alone for turning breech babies is less conclusive. Combining acupuncture with moxibustion is more effective.
- Timing: These techniques are more effective when initiated between 33 and 35 weeks of pregnancy before the baby gets too large to move as easily.
Moxibustion and Acupuncture are safe in Pregnancy
Both moxibustion and acupuncture are safe for pregnant women when performed by a qualified practitioner. I’ve been treating pregnant women with both Acupuncture and Moxibustion since 2003, for breech and many other issues such as morning sickness /nausea, acid reflux, carpel tunnel, swelling, pain, placenta previa, fatigue, gestational diabetes, hypertension and more.
If your baby is breech and you’re interested in exploring these options, I highly recommend acupuncture and moxibustion alongside your current care plan. If you’re living in or close to Vancouver, give me a call at (604) 733-2632 and I can answer any questions you might have about the process. When you come in for a treatment, I’ll also send you home with some moxa sticks and teach you how to use them.
