We are all always seeking effective and simple ways that keep us healthy, particularly towards harsher seasons such as the Winter. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the more in tune we are with nature, the healthier and more harmonized we will feel. The Winter brings cold, darkness and hibernation, reminding us all to slow down and perhaps reflect on our wellbeing, nurture our vital energy (Qi) and preserve our strength for the flourishing seasons ahead such as Spring and Summer!.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Winter is Yin in nature, because it is inactive, cold and damp. Quite often, our Qi is actually introverted and is rather easily depleted during the winter season. TCM views the Kidneys as the powerhouse of our bodies and they govern our development, reproduction, wellbeing and even longevity! While the corresponding organs to the Winter season are the Kidneys, the corresponding emotions to the kidneys are fear and depression. However, in the five element theory, water is the respective element of the kidney and black is its corresponding color.
It is important to remember that our bodies are constantly working harder than any other time of the year keeping us well, warm and fending off external pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria. For this reason, the “winter blues” are merely phases of sheer drainage of essential vital energy. We can all learn to nourish our Kidney Qi and restore harmony to our mind and body by adequate sleep. Since our bodies are not programmed to rejuvenate at a cellular level past midnight, it is crucial for our wellbeing for us to get into the habit of sleeping around ten at night. Secondly, it is important to eat both Yin nourishing foods that nurture our Kidneys, such as beans (particularly kidney beans), warm water, berries (Goji berries, blackberries), roasted nuts and seeds, fish, meats, black grapes, dark raisins, and rice. It is also essential to take more time than any other season to slow down, breathe and attend to self-care.
