The eternal search for a safe and effective deodorant can be exhaustive. And trust me, I’ve done the footwork! Some products work very well depending on the individual but I have found that making your own deodorant with clean, natural ingredients is incredibly effective.
Why try natural deodorant?
Surprisingly, there are many harmful chemicals in deodorants and antiperspirants. They often contain substances such as aluminum, parabens and triclosan that are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they can negatively impact your hormone function. Some chemicals applied to the skin can be absorbed into the blood stream so it’s important to be aware and informed of the products you use.
How does natural deodorant benefit your health?
The following ingredients used in this simple product can have incredible health benefits:
Coconut oil: Not only soothing and moisturizing, coconut oil contains lauric acid that has antimicrobial properties and helps kill bacteria that contributes to body odour.
Baking soda: This product has a more alkaline pH and is used to neutralize odours. *Caution: some patients are more sensitive to baking soda applied to the delicate underarm skin and may cause a mild rash. It’s an option to reduce or omit this ingredient from the recipe.
Arrowroot powder: This ingredient helps to absorb moisture and keep your underarms dry throughout the day.
Essential oils: Lavender is soothing, anti-bacterial and promotes wound healing. Other essential oils like sweet orange are uplifting and energizing and can be a great alternative depending on your preference. These essential oils should always be added to a carrier oil before being applied to the skin (ie. coconut oil in this recipe).
The Recipe:
- ¼ cup organic coconut oil (melted)
- ¼ cup arrowroot powder
- Essential oils of choice (optional)
- 1 tbsp baking soda (optional)
Directions:
– Gently heat coconut oil until melted, then add arrowroot powder and baking soda. When well combined, add a few drops of essential oil. Pour mixture into an empty container or small mason jar and refrigerate for 15minutes. Remove from fridge and apply as needed. It’s that easy!
*Not all products are appropriate for every patient. If you have allergies or sensitivities to any of the ingredients above please consult a Naturopathic Physician before use.
